Q2. Translate the following Marathi passage into English:
(a) भारतीय संस्कृतीचा संयम हा एकप्रकारे आत्मा आहे, असे म्हंटले तरी चालेल. भारतीय संस्कृती संयमावर उभारलेली आहे. आपण शंकराच्या देवळात जातो; परंतु आधी बाहेर कासवाची मूर्ती असते. या कासवाचे दर्शन घेतल्याशिवाय शिवाकडे, मृत्युंजयाकडे जाता येणार नाही. आणि कासव म्हणजे काय? कासव म्हणजे संयमाची मूर्ती. कासव आपले सारे अवयव क्षणात आत घेते, क्षणात बाहेर काढते. स्वत:च्या विकासांस अवसर असेल तर सारे अवयव बाहेर आहेत; स्वत:ला धोका असेल तर, सारे अवयव आत आहेत. असे हे कासव भारतीय संस्कृतीने गुरुस्थानी मानले आहे. देवाकडे जायचे असेल तर कासवाप्रमाणे होऊन जा. कासवाप्रमाणे स्वत:च्या इंद्रियांचे स्वामी व्हा. वाटेल तेव्हा इंद्रिये स्वाधीन राखता आली पाहिजेत. ज्याला जगाचे स्वामी व्हावयाचे असेल, त्याने आधी स्वत:चे स्वामी झाले पाहिजे. ज्याला देव आपलासा करून घ्यावयाचा आहे, त्याने आपले स्वतःचे मन आधी आपल्या ताब्यात घ्यावयास पाहिजे. शंकराची मूर्ती डोळ्यांसमोर आणा. शंकराला तिसरा डोळा आहे. दोन डोळयांमध्ये हा तृतीय नेत्र आहे. या तृतीय नेत्राचे काय काम? या तृतीय नेत्राचे काम पहारेकऱ्याचे आहे. डोळ्यांवर, कानावर, जिभेवर, सर्व इंद्रियांवर या डोळ्याची दृष्टी आहे. या तृतीय नेत्रात अग्नी आहे. माझ्या जीवनाच्या विकासाला जे जे विरोधी असेल, त्याचे त्याचे भस्म करावयास हा अग्नी सिद्ध आहे. हा तिसरा डोळा उघडा ठेवल्याशिवाय जीवनात सिद्धी नाही. माझ्या डोळ्यांनी वाटेल तेथे नाही पाहता कामा, कानांनी वाटेल ते नाही ऐकता कामा, जिभेने वाटेल ते नाही बोलता कामा, नाही खाता कामा. माझ्या हातांनी वाटेल ते नाही करता कामा, पायांनी वाटेल तेथे नाही जाता कामा. माझ्या ध्येयाला अनुकूल असणाऱ्या गोष्टींकडेच माझी इंद्रिये गेली पाहिजेत. या इंद्रिय–बैलांनी माझा जीवनरथ खड्डयात न घालता माझ्या प्राप्तव्यस्थानी नेला पाहिजे. ज्ञानेश्वरीमध्ये योगाचे वर्णन करताना फारच सुंदर ओव्या लिहिल्या आहेत. ज्याला कर्मयोग साधावयाचा आहे, त्याने हा संयमयोग अंगी आणणे आवश्यक आहे. योगी म्हणजे कर्मयोगी. सतत कर्मात रंगून जाणे. सारखी सेवा हातून होणे. यासाठी काय केले पाहिजे ? सारे मोजूनमापून केले पाहिजे. मोजके खाणे, मोजके पिणे, मोजके बोलणे, मोजके चालणे, मोजकी निद्रा. इंद्रियांना सारे द्यावयाचे, परंतू मोजूनमापून प्रमाणात द्यावयाचे. असे करीत गेल्याने जीवनात प्रसन्नता राहील. ही गोष्ट केवळ काल्पनिक नाही, ही अनुभवसिद्ध गोष्ट आहे. आपण समजा - अधिक जेवलो. भाजी आहे, खाल्ली वाटेल तितकी; बासुंदी आहे, ओरपली भराभर; तर काय होईल ? आलस्य येईल. अधिक खाल्ले की अधिक लोळावे लागते. एवढ्याने भागले असे नाही. अपचन होईल, अजीर्ण होईल, पोट दुखेल. कदाचित आजारीही पडण्याचा संभव. क्षणभर जिभेचे सुख अनुभवले, परंतु पुढे दहा दिवस अन्नाची रूची वाटणार नाही. पुढे दहा दिवस काही करता येणार नाही. कोठले कर्म नि कोठले काय! रात्री गाणे चालले आहे, बसलो दोन वाजेपर्यंत ऐकत. मग झोप पुरी होत नाही. झोप पुरी मिळाली नाही तर पचन नीट होत नाही. दुसऱ्या दिवशी कामही नीट होणार नाही. काम करताना डोळे पेंगू लागतील. अशा प्रकारे कर्मसिद्धी होणार नाही. ज्याचे जीवन काहीतरी ध्येयासाठी आहे, त्याचे जीवन सेवेसाठी आहे, त्याने म्हणून प्रमाणात सारे केले पाहिजे. प्रमाणात सारी शोभा आहे, प्रमाणात सौंदर्य आहे, संयमात सौंदर्य आहे. संयमाची पुष्कळ अविवेकी लोक टिंगल करतात. आम्हांला ही बंधने नकोत असे ते म्हणतात. परंतु स्वत: स्वत:वर घातलेली बंधने ही बंधने नाहीत. आपल्या लहरीचे गुलाम असणे म्हणजे काही स्वातंत्र्य नाही. स्वातंत्र्य म्हणजे स्वैराचार नव्हे. स्वातंत्र्य म्हणजे विकास; आणि संयमाशिवाय विकास नाही.
