Q3. समस्त संसार के भिन्न-भिन्न राष्ट्रों और जातियों को देखने से मालूम हो जाता है कि राष्ट्रीयता का भाषा और साहित्य के साथ बहुत ही घनिष्ठ सम्बन्ध है, ऐसा होना स्वाभाविक ही है, क्योंकि राष्ट्रीयता और जातीयता के अंगों में सबसे अधिक आवश्यक अंग एकता है और वह एकता किसी विषय विशेष में हो, वह एकता जितनी व्यापक होगी, उतनी ही राष्ट्रीयता में स्थिरता होगी और वह शक्तिशाली होगी। भावों की एकता अन्य सब प्रकार की एकताओं का मूल है और यह भावों की एकता तभी हो सकती है, जब वे विभिन्न व्यक्ति, जिनके द्वारा राष्ट्रीयता का निर्माण होता है, अपने भावों को एक-दूसरे पर व्यक्त कर सकें । इस महान कार्य के लिए एक भाषा की अत्यन्त आवश्यकता है। साहित्य क्या है ? साहित्य मानव जाति के उच्च से उच्च और सुन्दर से सुन्दर विचारों तथा भावों का वह गुच्छा है, जिसकी बाहरी सुन्दरता और भीतरी सुगन्ध दोनों ही मन को मोह लेते हैं । कोई जाति तब तक बड़ी नहीं हो सकती, जब तक कि उसके भाव और विचार उन्नतम न होंगे, तब उनका विकास उस जाति के साहित्य के रूप में हो सकता है। इसलिए जाति या राष्ट्र के साहित्य के उत्थान के साथ-साथ उस जाति या राष्ट्र के साहित्य की भी उन्नति और उत्थान होना स्वाभाविक है। इस प्रकार साहित्य की अवनति उस जाति के पतन का प्रमाण है । भारत के इतिहास को लीजिए – महाभारत, रामायण और उपनिषद् अवश्य ऐसे समय में लिखे गये थे जब यह देश बहुत उन्नत था, यह कल्पना असम्भव नहीं तो दुष्कर अवश्य है कि ऐसे ग्रन्थ-रत्न किसी असभ्य, बर्बर जाति के आचार्यों द्वारा लिखे गये हों।
