Cam mounted on the camshaft is a concentric cam with its centre of rotation positioned off centre and located at radial distance Δ from periphery of the cam as shown in the figure. The follower is to be held against the cam by a helical compression spring with a force that varies between 300 N and 600 N as spring length varies over a range of 25 mm. Ends of the spring are to be squared and ground. The material of spring is shot peened chrome-vanadium steel valve spring wire, ASTM232, with yield strength of 800 MPa. Elastic modulus of the spring material is 208 GPa with Poisson's ratio = 0.3. Determine a suitable combination of wire diameter, mean coil diameter, number of turns and free length of spring such that weight of the spring is minimized. Also check the design for spring surge.
