(a) जैव विविधता विश्व की जीवित प्रजातियों की विविधता है, जिसमें उनकी आनुवंशिक विविधता और उनके द्वारा निर्मित पारिस्थितिकी तंत्र के समुदाय सम्मिलित हैं। आज जीवन की यह विविधता गंभीर ख़तरों का सामना कर रही है। वैज्ञानिक इस बात पर सहमत हैं कि उष्णकटिबंधीय वनों की हानि और अस्थिरता की वर्तमान दरों पर आगामी चौथाई शती के दौरान प्रति दशक लगभग पाँच से दस प्रतिशत उष्णकटिबंधीय वन्य-प्रजातियाँ नष्ट हो जाएँगी। विलुप्त होने का संकट उष्णकटिबंधीय वनों तक ही सीमित नहीं है। नदियों के अवरुद्ध होने और विदेशी प्रजातियों के आने से मीठे जल के प्राकृतिक भंडारों में नाटकीय रूप से बदलाव आ रहा है। महासागरीय द्वीप, जहाँ विगत कई हज़ार वर्षों में अधिकांश विलप्तियाँ हुई हैं, धरती पर सबसे अधिक ख़तरे वाले पारिस्थितिकी तंत्रों में से एक हैं। प्रजातियों और आनुवंशिक विविधता की हानि, प्राकृतिक वास एवं पारिस्थितिकी तंत्र का क्षरण इस पीढ़ी तथा भावी पीढ़ियों के लिए एक बहुत बड़ी कीमत दर्शाता है। आज लुप्तप्राय प्रजातियों के मूल में अज्ञात खाद्य, चिकित्सा और इनका औद्योगिक उपयोग है। पारिस्थितिकी तंत्र मानव जनसंख्या के संरक्षण की अपनी क्षमता खो रहे हैं; और उनका क्षरण, मिट्टी के कटाव, जलाशयों के खारेपन, स्थानीय जलवायु परिवर्तन, मरुस्थलीकरण एवं उत्पादकता में कमी के द्वारा अत्यधिक कीमत चुकानी पड़ रही है। जैविक संसाधनों के मूल्य को निर्धारित करने के लिए तीन मुख्य दृष्टिकोणों का उपयोग किया गया है। उपभोग-उपयोग मूल्यांकन के अंतर्गत जलाऊ लकड़ी, चारा, शिकार किया गया मांस जैसे संसाधनों के मूल्य का आकलन करना शामिल है जिनका उपयोग बिना बाज़ार के होता है। उत्पादक-उपयोग मूल्यांकन में उन उत्पादों के मूल्य का आकलन करना शामिल है जिन्हें वाणिज्यिक दृष्टि से काटा व बेचा जाता है जैसे लकड़ी, मछली, मांस, शहद और औषधीय पौधे आदि। ग़ैर उपभोक्ता-उपयोग मूल्यांकन में पारिस्थितिकी
