Q1.
(a) 1. Answer the following questions: The pilot of an aeroplane flying horizontally at a height of 2000 m with a constant speed of 540 km/hour wishes to hit a target on the ground. At what distance from the target should he release the bomb in order to hit the target? At what angle would be the target appear to him from that distance?
(b) Derive an expression for the relation between shear strain energy and principal stresses.
(c) During an electric-discharge drilling of a mm square hole in a low-carbon steel plate of mm thickness, brass tool and kerosene are used. The resistance in the relaxation circuit is 50 Ω and the capacitance is 10 μF respectively. The supply voltage is 200 volts and the gap is maintained at such a value that the discharge (sparking) takes place at 150 volts. Estimate the time required to complete the drilling operation.
(d) What is the crystal structure of Barium? If the atomic volume is equal to 39.24 cm3/mole, then determine its linear density of atoms along the plane direction.
